Description
The University of California – birthplace of the Free Speech Movement – launched the National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement to support and advance research, education and advocacy on these challenging issues. The center explores how the fundamental democratic principles of free speech and civic engagement must meet the challenges and opportunities of modern society. Through research, advocacy, debate and discussion, the center helps ensure that the next generation of leaders is prepared to defend and advance these values.
Howard Gillman, chancellor of the University of California, Irvine and a noted First Amendment scholar, serves as co-chair of the center’s advisory board and provides administrative oversight of the center. He’s also joint author of a new book, “Free Speech on Campus,” with Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the UC Berkeley law school.
Chancellor Gillman will discuss the generational shift in students’ views on free speech and the impact on the campus conversation. His remarks will touch on cutting-edge issues such as the cost of protecting speech, the changing nature of protests on campus and what role colleges and universities can play to ensure the robust exchange of ideas.
